I lost myself on a cool damp night
Gave myself in that misty light
Was hypnotized by a strange delight
Under a lilac tree
I made wine from the lilac tree
lost my heart in its recipe
It made me see what I want to see
and be what I want to be
When I think more than I ought to think
I Do things I never should do
I drink much more than I ought to drink
Because it brings me back you...

Lilac wine is sweet and heady
like my love
Lilac wine, I feel unsteady,
like my love

Listen to me...
I cannot see clearly
Isn't that he coming to me nearly here?
Lilac wine is sweet and heady
where's my love?
Lilac wine, I feel unsteady
where's my love?

Listen to me, why is everything so hazy?
Isn't that he, or am I going crazy?
Lilac Wine, I feel unready
for my love...
Feel unready for my love...

I would have bet my **** that it wouldn't have been. Obviously, I disagree completely, it's one of her best interpretations. Besides, it's a quite difficult song to sing, and Katie already in this early interpretation at only 19 years shows what she's able to do. I'm happy that she's performing it live again.

By the way: It's a cover. Why has the cover section been opened?

I just love this song, and how Katie's voice is on it especially when it's sung live.

Her live performance in Hannover was absolutely stunning, I would have never believed that song can be so beautiful. :o On the album, it sounds awful, much too whiny. She was not yet capable of singing such a song at that time, I think.

Lilac Wine is a beautiful, lyrically brilliant song. Nina Simone's version I consider the standard by which all others are measured. Often any song Katie covers she makes her own, but this is the exception.

There are a lot of covers that have had topics created about them, as people want to discuss more deeply the songs. I've always seen the covers section a place to sort of roughly discuss covers, or covers that aren't as well known a the covers on her albums ;)

Exactly what I had in mind when I started the Covers topic.

A beautifully sung cover and I think the album version is great. She imbues this song with a kind of tipsiness which is perfect for it. I drink much more than I ought to drink Great, especially that last craaaaaaaaaazzzzeeeeeeeeeeeeee! :woohoo:

Exactly what I agree too immediately. So let's start goin' a bit further than "I love it" / "It's not my favourite".

I'm sorry, I must agree with you on that point. This is one of the songs that I do not really like because is too 'flighty' and 'capricious', not really right for Katie to sing, maybe someone else. Her performance is good, but I do not enjoy the 'lyricism' as it were. I do not like songs that recount stories. :suspect:

When I first heard it on COTS, I did not like it. However, her performance of it in Wembley Arena made me reconsider it, and its slowly growing on me, though at a snails pace.
Probaly the delivery here is still not convincing me fully....

This is my favourite part of the song too! :music:

And I think her voice fits perfectly with the lyrics, being different from what it usually is...

Is that what you really mean, because surely most songs have a story, including loads of Katie's?

Well as far as I am concerned some songs just appeal to me and some just don't. That is one of my don'ts. :D :D

I was referring to the style of the song in which a story or tale is recounted. This is mostly known as a 'character piece'. Just like Heaven is another example of this kind of song...here is a fact I don't know if you know...this song was first written by James Shelton, then covered by Eartha Kitt(1953), Judy Henske(1963), Nina Simone(1966), Elkie Brooks(1978), Jeff Buckley(1994), and most recently Katie Melua(2003). The biggest success, is said to have come in 1978. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilac_Wine

I used to really love this song but over time I've come to tolerate it only which is strange. I think Katie has grown as a musician and I've grown with her, rendering some of her earlier stuff as not so likeable. Thats not true of all her songs because I still love most of her earlier stuff, but it is true in this case. When pictures first came out I admit I was not quite so keen, now it is my second favourite album of all time. PBP being my favourite so she's not doing too badly having the top two albums in my all time favourites.
I'm going to demote Lilac wine in my list with Kewa.

Indeed. And that's why Lilac Wine now fits even better to her than when she was a 19 year young girl. Katie's playing this song on the actual tour alone with the guitar. Strange, my general impression here is that the songs which Katie herself prefers often are refused by the fans. As to me, a lot of people have a wishful thinking design of Katie's character in their mind which has nothing to do with reality.

But she was so young, and... I like that performance, though.
It is, after all, the OTRA DVD!

I hadn't realised the song was so old and I agree that it suits Katie's style better now than when she was starting out- a bit like MAIY in that respect, although the songs are dissimilar.
Which songs do you mean that are 'refused by the fans'?
