One of my all-time favourites now; she's very emotional and passionate when she sings it I think because of what Eva Cassidy meant to her personally. Have provided a link, let me know if it doesn't work. (Sorry, can't get onto Youtube and post a video here.)http://www.last.fm/music/Katie+Melua/_/Faraway+Voice

Katie Melua - Faraway Voice

Whoo
Faraway voice,
We can hear you whoo voice,
What's it like to be heard,
But from you not a word,
Are you over those hills,
Do you still hum the old melodies,
Do you wish people listened,
Over here with me,
Whoo [x2]

Faraway voice,
What I would give to hear that voice,
What's it like to breath,
My ears deceive me voice,

And I will walk with you on a summers day,
And I will talk to you,
Though you're faraway,
And we'll sing through the years,
Are you over those hills,
Do you still hum the old melodies,
Do you wish people listened,
Over here with me [x3]
Whoo [x2]

Although I know how much it means to her and the passion she gives whilst performing it, unfortunately not one of my favourites.
May have to listen to it more to appreciate it.

I think it's a little more "traditional" than most of her other songs, with a bit of a 'folk song' kind of feel to it. I don't know about anyone else. This is my own opinion. I found it a little difficult to listen to at first because it is a bit 'surreal', and not really in touch with reality and things that people deal with down here on earth on a day to day basis.

Also one of my all time favourites. I think, this was also the song, which blow away Mike.

I have to say, that I also love the spanisch version "Otra Vez Tu"

Do you know where I can find a copy of that??? I have always wanted to hear it but have not been able to. I translated Faraway Voice into Spanish but it didn't work to well.

It's available on iTunes :)

Otherwise to speak about "Faraway Voice", it's one of the songs that made me realise how Katie's voice could be strong and sweet at the same time...

For some reason it's was quite low in my ranking, but I don't know what I was thinking then, it's definitively a wonderful song :music:

Certainly a top 20 song for me, but not one of my absolute favourites. In fact, there is a part in it which I really do not like, it's the way she sings the line "What's it like to be heard" singing the word "like" going up and down (I think you know what I mean). That's too playful and doesn't fit to the overall mood of the song which is very sad and emotional.

Really? That is one of my favourite parts of the song. I find the song more uplifting and inspirational than sad. It is one of my favourites from COTS and definitely under-rated. The lyrics come across so natural and effortless in its tribute to the late singer.

one of my favourites top ten I think. I think this song is what Katie does best and the type of song others find hard to sing. she loses her voice when she ups the tempo too much going from an excellent singer to a run of the mill singer.

This is yet another brilliant song.

After hearing Nine Million Bicycles on the radio several times, I searched for other songs. This was the second song I discovered, and then my addiction began... :o

This was also the song which she played when she first met Mike Batt.

I remember I heard this song several times on CD and DVD. I always loved it!

Last year in summer I heard it for the very first time live ... I had to hold on because Katies voice nearly blow me away at this particular song

Such a pity that she didn't sing it at the current tour

You´re right. It was a great experience to hear this song live. And I hope she´ll sing it again sometime in the future.

One of these songs where you can hear a pin drop when sung live by Katie. It creates an unbelievable atmosphere. I love it, both live and on CD, it’s just a great song.

This song really kinda missed on this year’s tour. ;)

This is a real lump-in-throat song for me. Partly because it's where the Katie Melua story started, in the sense that it's the song she wrote, her first on a guitar, three weeks before Mike Batt turned up at the Brit School wanting to audition young talent. What did he write in his notebook? Something like 'Small girl. Sung own song. Good voice'. A master of understatement :D . But also in part because of what Eva meant to Katie: the inspiration for her to pursue a singing career.

I really like this song. Especially the begin where she make "whoo" and the part "And we'll sing through the years,Are you over those hills," where she gets a little bit louder

I entirely agree with you. All I would say is that this song has special significance for us all because I suppose if she hadn't sung it to MB that day, none of us would be here. Those odd notes perhaps show a bit of naievity in her song writing back then and in a way it's nice to have that preserved in this particular song. :)

That song is perfect, I guess.
But then... how about this?

That's roughly what my thoughts about this are as well, I just did not dare writing that since I feared it might upset some people.

I second that. This part in the way Katie sings it brings a lot of emotion into that song. For me this is brilliant, how Katie sings that

This is a question to the english native speaking members about "Faraway Voice", one of my favourite songs:
Is there a difference in the meaning of "faraway" in one word and "far away" written in two words. According to my dicionary "far away" in two words means simply "a long distance away". "Faraway" in one word has the meaning (or at least the additional meaning) of being "dreamy" or "pensive".

If you look it up on dict.leo.org (the best online dictionary I know), it does not confirm any additional meaning, saying that "faraway" means distant and is used like this only as an attribute. And the lyrics strongly suggest this meaning as well,

Quote:
Are you over those hills?
Do you still hum the old melodies?
Do you wish people listened?
Over here with me,

It indicates distance. And if we think of what inspired Katie to write it, this meaning makes perfect sense as well. ;)
