You're beautiful so silently
It lies beneath a shade of blue
It struck me so violently
When I looked at you

But others pass, they never pause
To feel that magic in your hand
To me you're like a wild rose
They never understand why

I cried for you
When the sky cried for you
And when you went
I became a hopeless drifter
But this life was not for you
Though I learned from you
That beauty need only be a whisper

I'll cross the sea for a different world
With your treasure, a secret for me to hold

In many years they may forget
This love of ours or that we met
They may not know
How much you meant to me

I cried for you
And the sky cried for you
And when you went
I became a hopeless drifter
But this life was not for you
Though I learned from you
That beauty need only be a whisper

Without you now I see
How fragile the world can be
And I know you've gone away
But in my heart you'll always stay

I cried for you
When the sky cried for you
And when you went
I became a hopeless drifter
But this life was not for you
Though I learned from you
That beauty need only be a whisper
That beauty need only be a whisper

I really love this song, it is sung so beautifully. One of those song that you rarely find.

Sad, soulful, but I despise that bizarre music video, what were they thinking? :o

The song is all but flawless: her delivery of it shows both heart and pain. Definately stops you in your tracks and and makes you listen. Love it when she performs it live since none of the power of the recording is lost; sometimes it's even better!!!

I actually think this is her best video: the effects are quite good and the concept is quite original. But I quite understand why people find it bizarre and/or disturbing.
Something similar to Robbie Williams' "Rock DJ": great effects and concept, but not for the faint of heart!!!

I Cried For You: one of my alltime favourites of Katie

I remember summer 2007 in the Zitadelle in Spandau/Berlin. Katie managed the lines

"... And I know you've gone away
But in my heart you'll always stay"

so wonderful, that she got inbetween applause   Unforgetable! :approve:

Unbelievable song. Katie shows, who great songwriter she is and how amazing she performs those songs, she wrote her own. A clear candidate for her best off album.

Still unknown, if she really speaks about Maria Magdalena in the lyrics. I think, Mark has more information on this

I fully agree. :approve: The live performance of it is just incredible, I even prefer it to Spider's web which is my favourite album track. The video, however, is a huge pile of sh*** .

Since I'm not english speaking, first hearing this song doesn't made an effect on me.
But after first reading the lyrics, I began to cry and fell in love with this song

How are you dealing with the lyrics of the songs? I have a little "book" with all of them, and I would like to learn them completely.

My absolute number one Katie song :approve:

I was so delighted when Katie had to play this song twice due to the dvd recording in Rotterdam :music:

I've seen her 5 times now, and everytime she played this masterpiece!!! So I've heard this song 6 times live....

I agree with those who say this is probably Katie's best composition - very powerful indeed.

Am I alone then in not really liking this song all that much? I don't understand it (it's deliberately obscure) and there doesn't seem to be an interpretation which can be put which is accessible to everyone that hears it. Religious connotations don't do a lot for me either. :|
The video is hideous; I 've only seen it once and I stopped it half way through.

I quite like this song but it is by no means my favourite. But it makes a change finding someone who dislikes the video as much as me.

I love ICFY. This song is very nuanced and deep. Katie mentioned it took her a long time to write this song, and I'd imagine it takes a lot out of her to sing it with the amount of emotion that the song requires.

No comment on the video; I think it takes the listener away from the song. If Katie shot the video like Sinead O'Conner's Nothing Compares 2 U, then that would be amazing and powerful. The song doesn't require flashy elements or abstract "arty" interpretations.

Strange video indeed... I just looked at it but I have had to put the sound on mute... Katie still managed to move me when she was herself... It's really impressive how she transmits emotions, I could almost hear the song while just looking at her face and her lips moving...

Another song you have on Piece by Piece is "I Cried for You", also called "Mary's Song". With the recent release of the film The Da Vinci Code, there's a lot of speculation on Mary Magdalene and the implication that she was involved with Jesus. I found that there was some discussion that this song may have been a Mary Magdalene reference, and I was wondering if you could expound on that.

KATIE: Funnily enough, you're one of the few people that ever caught onto that. It's not really from "The Da Vinci Code", it's more from the book, "Holy Blood, Holy Grail", which is one of the first ever books that introduced the idea of Mary Magdalene and Jesus.

The reason why I wrote the song was because I met Michael Baigent, who was the writer of Holy Blood, Holy Grail, and we just got into this discussion, and he told me his theory. And it just kind of really inspired me, purely from the point of view that... Everyone's getting really uptight about the whole religious aspect of it, and to me, I kind of just wanted to look at it in a different point of view. Let's, just for argument's sake, pretend that it really did happen. Maybe they really were in a relationship of some sort, maybe they were married. Imagine the suffering that she'd have had to have gone through to see someone she loved so dearly go through that much while he's being crucified.

And suddenly I just had all these waves of emotion, and I thought this could be a song. I don't really look at it as purely being about Mary sort of missing Jesus or anything like that, but that was kind of where the song came from for me. Now a lot of people listen to that song and they can relate it to anyone that they've ever lost. I didn't want to be all about the controversy of the whole religious thing. Let's just pretend it's a love story for a second, and it could be a really nice love story

My apologies to KEWA for not having expanded on my previous explanation about Mary Magdalene, but I couldn't have done it better than Katie did in that interview.
