If a black man is racist, is it okay?
When it's the white man's racism that made him that way,
Because the bully's the victim they say,
By some sense they're all the same.

Because the line between,
Wrong and right,
Is the width of a thread,
From a spider's web.
The piano keys are black and white,
But they sound like a million colours in your mind.

I could tell you to go to war,
Or I could march for peace and fighting no more,
How do I know which is right,
And I hope he does when he sends you to fight.

Because the line between wrong and right,
Is the width of a thread from a spider's web,
The piano keys are black and white,
But they sound like a million colours in your mind.

Should we act on a blame?
Or should we chase the moments away?
Should we live?
Should we give?
Remember forever the guns and the feathers in time.
Because the line between wrong and right,
Is the width of a thread from a spider's web,
The piano keys are black and white,
But they sound like a million colours in your mind.
The piano keys are black and white,
But they sound like a million colours in your mind,
But they sound like a million colours in your mind

Definitely one of my favourite Katie songs, such amazing, powerful lyrics. I put this as number 3 in my list, but I can't decide on which way round WIMAY and Spider's Web should go.

Definitely one of her best songs indeed, really great lyrics as you said. What really strong is the way the song and the performance of Katie maintain the emotion. Just amazing, my favourite Katie's song when I started to listen to her music :D And still one of my favourite.

Spider's Web was released on April 17, 2006. The third single from Piece by Piece peaked at #52 in the UK charts.

TV Total appearance & mini performance (March 14, 2006)

AVO Session in Basel

While this song is not one of my favourites simply because it's political, I'll admit after watching countless YouTube videos of others attempting to sing this song, you come to really appreciate Katie's voice and vocal performance.

Indeed one of her best songs. Always a highlight when she plays this live.

I have come to love this song too. The lyrics are remarkable and raise some very political questions.
The overall messages are very broad but one line stands out for me:
How do I know which is right,
And I hope he does when he sends you to fight.

Can we assume this is directed at Tony Blair's decision to join Bush in invading Iraq?

I will never ever figure out why most music stores refused to stock the single. It was only available in two of the 7 local music stores. It was also not on any of the radio playlists.

Surely the song wasn't deemed to be too subversive to be given air time, or don't you think the reason was political?
At the time I wasn't aware of the song at all.

I have no idea of the reason, but the result was a fact. Woolworths wouldn't stock it neither would Music Box. The only stores in the whole of Billingham, Stockton and Middlesborough were HMV and Virgin. I bought the only 5 they had in Virgin Middlesborough at the normal price of £1.99 The few I got from HMV were £2.99. For the rest I had to send my 'scouts' for miles across the area.

This track all but consolidated my afnatism to Katie´s music. Probaly her best self-written song and one that continues to haunt the listener way after it's finished. There's a lot of passion and anger in her vocals here; I also love the piano parts.
Strange that it failed to chart well in the UK.

This is also an unsolved riddle to me! I think if Radiosation would play this song regulary more and more people would be curious about Katies other music (not only the ballads).

Personally I have to say this song more and more grew on me. Now it is my absolute favourite. :approve: It is also the ringtone of my mobilephone. ;)

This song is particularly important to me because of the aspect of going to war. I think the line, ''And I hope he does when he sends you to fight'', are directed at Tony Blair because I think Katie said in an interview she wrote it when she was 18 which was when the Iraq war started and the war in Afghanistan had been going on for some months. Personally, I'm ok with the thought of going to Afghanistan, but not to Iraq, because I feel their is a purpose for the military to be there whereas in Iraq that was false intelligence that led to it being started.

This song has been my favourite for quite a long time. And it still is one of the very best. :)

I’ve not heard it in german radio so far, but I might be wrong because I usually don’t listen to radio. The only songs I know they played here are NMB, CTTC and IYWAS (not too often).

It's simply a song written by Katie, and it contains the central message of her work so far.

I cannot see a political song in it, sorry. Just because she mentions racism and her inspiration to write the song was the Iraq war, that doesn't make the song itself political. It's more general than that, it tells you that there is more in life than just "good" or "bad", there is a lot more in between and only that variety and the interplay between both (piano keys!) makes up the world and our life. This is not political, it goes far beyond that. And it's my absolute favourite! :approve:

No it's not entirely political but about making difficult decisions. But how do we know whether they are right or wrong? Well we can't except with hindsight; it's about judgement. I think in many ways, although there's a political comment, it's not a critical song but a reflective one. Almost saying 'anyone can make mistakes'

For me, it was my Katie No.1, before WIMAY came.

I love the way, she sings it and the way she sings:

Should we act on a blame?
Or should we chase the moments away?
Should we live?
Should we give?
Remember forever the guns and the feathers in time.

Uaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, unbelievable. Katie, please more of that incredible power in your voice!!!

I think I don't have to bother to write anything, you've said it all! :D Just brilliant, my N°1 too :) And I like even more the single version :music:

My favourite version is the Live Version. The best ever version was during the tour 2006.

Of course the Live Version is -almost- always better :strum: especially when you're at the concert :D
The good thing is that I except Katie will sing SW for a long time live as it's one of her favourites (if not the n°1, but she hasn't posted her ranking yet :lolk:)

Good idea: Katie, why haven't you post your ranking yet???

Spider's Web will last forever. A Katie concert without Spider's Web is like Shakespear without "To be or not to be..."
