When you taught me how to dance
Years ago, with misty eyes,
Every step and silent glance,
Every move, a sweet surprise.
Someone must have taught you well,
To beguile and to entrance,
For that night you cast your spell,
And you taught me how to dance.

Like reflections in a lake
I recall what went before.
As I give, I’ll learn to take,
And will be alone no more
Other lights may light my way
I may even find romance;
But I won’t forget that night
When you taught me how to dance

Cold winds blow, but up on those hills you’ll find me
And I know you’re walking right behind me,

When you taught me how to dance
Years ago, with misty eyes,
Every step and silent glance,
Every move, a sweet surprise.
Someone must have taught you well,
To beguile and to entrance,
For that night you cast your spell,
And you taught me how to dance.
And you taught me how to dance.

This is one of my favourite songs and I just read this on the Guestbook and I thought it was worthy of being posted here.

Simply how lovely your song is that played on the Miss Potter movie. I was enchanted by memories of day's gone by when I did learn how to dance. I can't dance now I am disabled. But, with your song I did dance again, I just closed my eye's and at 56 yrs of age I was 10 yrs old again. So, I now can also say, "When You Taught Me How to Dance".

Thank you

This song is a real beauty....

I've seen her perform this one live a while ago with the little music box as intro. I was a bit dissapointed when I realised that it wasn't on the studio version...

Especially the lines: Cold winds blow, but up on those hills you'll find me, and I know you're walking right behind me are excellent :approve:

We ought to tank Mike Batt for writing this classic!!!

What a lovely message :)

I really like When You Taught Me How To Dance, although it isn't very high in my ranking although it actually should be, I thought I'd put it higher

This song never caught me like others I guess. There’s certainly some special beauty in it, I’ll give it some more time..

Apart from the lyrics, there is a sensual quality in the way the song was recorded, like Katie is whispering into her lover's ear. You can hear her take breaths between each line. There is also an innocent quality to the song that matches well with the film.

An absolutely lovely song. The tenderness and the sweetness of Katie are just wonderful... a magical lullaby that makes me remind all my childhood  Love it.

One of my all-time favourites. I was there in Wembley when she first performed it live and I have loved the song ever since.

Yes, there is a sweetness and tenderness in her vocal delivery that all but grabs your attention and makes you feel relax. Mike Batt and co. really hit a home run with this one; shame though, that it was ignored at the Oscars.

Thanks for the guestbook post Mel. Like I said in RAH thread, it's beautiful how the little things end up making your day better!!!

THANKL YOU KATIE!!!! :approve: :approve:

I totally agree with you Ronald in this! :approve:

Especially the lines '...and I know you're walking right behind me' still gives me goose bumps after all the time

A-B-S-O-L-U-T-E-L-Y WONDERFUL!   (I have only to think about it gives me goose bumps)

It is such a shame, that the movie around this song never made up its way to our cinemas, DVD-Stores or tv stations here :x :x

I like this song so much... it was the second song she played on my first Katie gig ever (Trier, December 2006).
She performed it "solo" with her acoustic guitar and was only accompanied by this small music box. That was a truly magical moment... would absolutely love to hear this one live again.

This song is my mother's favourite :) And I love it too, she just has the perfect voice for this one.. She did an amazing job, to be honest, I didn't like the miss potter movie at all, the only reason I checked it out was because my mother told me she sang a song in it.. (But she didn't tell me it was just on the end, so I watched the whole movie)

Great song..

It's really a brilliant song-what a shame it's not on the regular album but only on this weird Japanese Bonus Version and that it's not played during her tour. :x

This is also one of those songs, who usually makes me cry. Katie shows, how much emotion she can bring into a song. In that aspect (and a lot of others), she is uncomparable brilliant.

As Roland, for me, the best version, I have ever heard of that song, was the accoustic version, she played live in the winter 2006/2007.

This song makes me want to teach her how to dance... or the other way around, I don't care! :lolk:
But no need to teach Katie how to sing, she does again an amazing performance with WYTMHTD (Haven't got the acoustic or live versions, I should look for those! :strum: )

I'm more of a dance learner, and I'd love to do so... But with Katie, not your father! :P No offence :lolk:
