I'll try to write down the lyrics, please correct my mistakes:

Toes teased the grass while you read me from The Tempest
Kiss cracking glass while you read me from The Tempest
Then the pearls reappeared
from the free and savage sea

I''d be nowhere without you
I'd be nowhere
Chaos colliding
in cold air
Without you I'd be nowhere
We are all we need
in this wild sea

The words you weave for me I love to feel
Could not believe when you spun me like a spinning wheel
You're the compass I'm the map
Atop this free and savage sea

I''d be nowhere without you
I'd be nowhere
Chaos colliding
in cold air
Without you I'd be nowhere
We are all we need
in this wild sea

(2x)

Now that was wonderful! :joyjoy:

I'll give it some more listenings of course, but my first impression was, that for something that had to be written in such short time it's really good, but on an absolute scale, it's at most an average Katie song.
I don't really understand the lyrics, btw. What is "you read me from the tempest" e.g. supposed to mean?

Exactly, Mariska!

@ Lepton: The Tempest is a romantic play by Shakespeare. The man whom the song is about is a poet himself, he wrote a lot of poems for his wife (the winner of the auction) and he also read to her parts from the Tempest. It's one of the memories and stories of the winner that Katie included in the song. I have this info from Katie's blog and what she said on the Terry Wogan show where she sang this.

About the lyrics: I think I made a mistake. "The words you read for me I love to feel" I think should be "The words you weave for me I love to feel". Do you guys think so too? If so, I'll change it.

@ Lepton:

I would not try to put a meaning into the lyrics, they are personal written for that woman and her husband so I think only they and Katie know what It really means.

Lepton I had the same question. ;) Is William Shakespeare's "The Tempest" Katies favourite book
or is it the favourite book of that guy. 8-)

I know, I just didn't think of that.  Then it makes sense, of course. The "kiss cracking glass" still doesn't, however, and I wonder if "being spun like a spinning wheel" is something good or bad.  But maybe I should really see it like Hans and not even try to give it a meaning since only Katie and the woman who won the auction can understand it.

Oh, and another thing: "You're the compass, I'm the map". I wonder if in context with "I'd be nowhere without you" something like "You're the compass, I'm the ship." wouldn suit better... But OK, a "would-be songtexter" like me maybe has a special view on lyrics... :joyjoy:

you have to consider that this is a song especially written for this lady and dedicated to her husband. Katie took those little stories she got told and kind of made it into a song which means all those little quotes like the "kiss cracking glass" have a personal meaning. It´s about their first kiss, him being so shocked he knocked off the glasses from the table. I guess you really have to listen to the interview with Terry Wogan, the lady and Katie to get those allusions!

Yeah, you can explain an awful lot when you listen to the interview and read Katie's most recent blog. Both are posted on the forum. To answer your question, The Tempest is not Katie's favourite AFAIK, but it is the play this guy used to read for his wife who won the competition. The kiss cracking glass (I really love those words!) Ela already explained. The spinning wheel refers to the dancing they did.

Hope that helps.

First of all, amazing Katie with divine voice and lot's of emotions. Only Katie can sing like that. Also the melodie is just brilliant. for me, the lyrics must not make sence for us. I was also struggeling to understand the meaning. It must only make sense for the lady the song was written for. For me, Katie has shown, what outstanding songwriter she is. Imagine. She only had one day and had to go to Holland. Unbelievable!!! Katie, please more of such stuff on the next album!!!

I did listen to the little interview before the song, so the lyrics were quite clear from the first time. What a dream to have a song about yourself (and your beloved), written and sung by Katie! If there's another occasion, I'm gonna bid :D

This is a fantastic tune and really shows how much she's grown a a songwriter. Yes, one can tell that it was written in a haste, but that doesn't deterr the fact that she nailed the emotions the song entailed.
Personally, I love Wogan's quick reaction after she finishes: pretty much sums up the song!!! :joyjoy:
A Katie clasic for years to come... :music: :music: :music:

(still wondering how it would have sounded If I had won...    )

It's not very special for me. The avarage level as Lepton said, but rather in the second half of Katie's songslist. Even if i don't get the full meaning of lyrics the melody is not very catchy for me. I wish all of you who finds it great to have a lot of fun with 'I'd be nowhere without you' ;)

The song is like a raw diamond. You can already imagine its brilliance, but it still has to be polished to get it's full beauty. :D

I'm not sure if translation to polish would change it :D:D:D Full understaning might be possible only for KM and the couple and maybe it would be an attack on their privacy if we try to find what is it in fact about :)

She goes a bit off tune in the chorus.

Katie never goes off tune, because she defines the tune! :e: :e:
But, seriously, could you tell me what time in the video you mean, because I haven't noticed anything off tune :?

I think too, that it is not off-tune. She brings a special kind of emotion into the song. For me that is just amazing

Very lovely song, and Katie sounds great, seems that her voice like spear pierces the soul. In the good side, certainly. :)

Uaaaaah, the song is on the way to become my favourite song. Katie is simply out of this world, when she sings that. How can she possibly write that in one single day!!! Unbelievable
