My mama done tol me, when I was in pig tails
My mama done tol me, hone
A man is a two-face, he’ll give you the big eye
And when the sweet talkings done
A man is a two-face, a worrisome thing who’ll leave ya to sing
The blues in the night

Now the rains a-fallin, hear the trains a-callin,
"whooee!"
Hear that lonesome whistle blowin cross
the trestle, "whooee!"
a-whooee-ah-whooee, clickety-clack
a-echoin back
Blues in the night

From Natchez to mobile, from Memphis to St. Joe, wherever the
four winds blow
I been in some big towns and heard me some big talk, but there
is one thing I know
A man is a two-face, a worrisome thing who’ll leave ya to sing
The blues in the night

Instrumental

My mama done tol me, when I was in pig tails
My mama done tol me, hone
A man is a two-face, he’ll give you the big eye
And when the sweet talkings done
A man is a two-face, a worrisome thing who’ll leave ya to sing
The blues in the night

My mama done tol me

Katie's best blues performance by far. One of the "hidden" highlights of PbP.
(they're too many to count!!)

I really didn´t realize we had not include every song in the song only discussion..
I love that one, and Justin´s harmonica solo is great!

I really dislike this song. I cannot put my finger on it but it has that quasi-blues sound from an underdeveloped singer without the experience or gravitas to pull off such a performance. I'm sure Katie has improved vastly in her live performances but the CD version is lacking.

The phrase "my mama done tol me" somehow or another I find unappealing.

I did like it very much, when I heard it on PBP, but it really killed me, when I heard it during the tour 2006. That song has an incredible power

It's really a great live song, but I like the PbP version as well. :music:

I prefer the NSJF version because of that particular moment at 2:34. In that one moment Katie's voice sounds perfectly together with Justin's harmonica. That's amazing. "...in the niiiight..." :D :music: :strum:

(Youtube with its sound quality spoils it a little, but just a little, and luckily we have the wmv and divx records of this concert.)

Wow, I didn't know that. Thank you, Patreides

You didn't know that? :frownk: :confusedk: :smirkk:
I just can't believe it.
Although, to be honest, I'm a little tone-deaf. But just a little. :suspect:
I mean... I don't have a (sense of) absolute pitch, unfortunately. :(
I don't mean to fabricate a new "urban legend" about Katie.
All I know is that I love that moment, for some reason.

I like the album version, but the live version is much better, very intense :music:

This one on the CD is okay....but it is like she isn't quite 'there' yet with such a powerful song.

Live, specifically AVO Session, it is a totally different story. The song just blossomed. It had me at the begining, when the camera pans to her face on '...hon', I stared at my computer monitor, mouth open. I played it over and over that first week.

I'm thinking about replacing my ipod Piece by Pice playlist "Blues" with the AVO one. I hardly ever play the studio version anymore.
